Storyline

The story of The Killian Leaflets controversy (a.k.a. "Rathergate") in the days leading up to the 2004 presidential election. When expert newscaster Dan Rather and CBS News head Mary Mapes choose to air a section on 60 Minutes exposing how reproachful President Bush avoided being drafted to Vietnam finished his father's party-political advantages, the resulting fallout eventually costs them their jobs and reputations.

This incident repeats me of Jack Anderson, writer in the 1960s-70s, who ran a story about Senator Thomas Eagleton having been sentenced of drunk driving-later proved untrue.

This became a major problem for Eagleton, who was then consecutively for V.P., with McGovern and had admitted to having some cerebral issues, that aided in his decision to drop off the Democrats ticket in 1972.

I reference this because it seems both journalists got too excited to wait and check the facts.

These reporters are very determined in their own right, like the politicians they claim to keep in check.
