Storyline:

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is supposed dead after a fierce storm and left behindhand by his crew. But Watney has lived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only scanty supplies, he must draw upon his inventiveness, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to indication to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work untiringly to bring "the Martian" home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney's safe return.

I can't quite whip up the eagerness for this movie that many others have.

It's fine. Good even. But no more than that.

Mars to me looks very, very much like Colorado although it turns out it's Hungary and Jordan in fact.

Matt Damon's performance is likable but not appealing and actually I couldn't particularly empathise with anyone in the cast.

The major plot 'twist' is foreseeable.

The effects are good but nonentity we haven't seen before apart from possibly the opening sandstorm sequence.

And then it kind of turns into Gravity. A movie I detested.

I didn't detest this but it's a long way depressed Ridley Scott's list of achievements. In fact I'd rate it below Prometheus, a sadly under-rated movie.
